Mike’s Weekly Division Breakdown – AFC West

Denver Broncos
Kansas City Chiefs
Las Vegas Raiders
Los Angeles Chargers

Denver Broncos (3-0)

Denver had a great start to the season going 3-0 to find themselves tied with the Raiders for first place. DEN’s last 3 opponents were, NYG, NYJ, and JAX. All of which don’t have a win this season so I’m not putting any stock into this 3-0 record. For all of you sports bettors, DK currently has Broncos win total at 10.5… I’d hammer the under.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCESMelvin GordonTim PatrickCourtland Sutton

PLAYERS I LOVE

Courtland Sutton
~ Sutton is currently WR39
~ 8.7 PPR
~ 5/5 37 YDS 7.4 YPC
~ 3 out of 3 RedZone Targets for the team
~ 3-3 in RedZone

  • In the last two weeks, Sutton has led his team in targets with 12 and then 5 last week. This is reassurance that Sutton is the #1 WR after having only 3 targets in week 1 and being an afterthought.
  • KJ Hamler and Jerry Jeudy will still be out for some time with injuries and because of that, I feel very confident in Sutton in my WR2/FLEX ROS.
  • Sutton has BAL, PIT, LVR, and CLE next which should change the game script to favor the pass which should lead to more opportunities.

Tim Patrick
~ Patrick is currently WR31
~ 14.8 PPR
~ 5/5 98 YDs 19.6 YPC
~ 0 out of 6 RedZone Targets

  • Patrick has OUT PERFORMED Sutton so far this year.
  • Patrick hasn’t had a game under 12.7 PPR points.
  • With a tough schedule coming up I expect the passing game to see more action and Courtland Sutton to see the best defender on each team. Sutton’s size and talent should attract the best coverage corner on each team remaining with the injuries to Jeudy and Hamler.
  • This leaves a great opportunity for Patrick to remain consistent over the next 4 weeks and is why I would be confident in having Parick as my WR3/FLEX ROS.

Melvin Gordon
~ Gordon is currently RB12
~ 18-61 1 TD 3.4 YPC
~ 6 out of 12 RedZone Attempts
~ 1 TD in RedZone

  • Gordon has been the lead RB through 3 weeks so far.
  • Williams can also pose a threat in this offense and if under any circumstances, Williams were to see the lead back role, Williams would be an automatic start every week.
  • Both RBs have a great opportunity to score PPR points with passing-game usage.
  • Teddy B isn’t afraid to dump the ball down when he has to.
  • With Gordon and Williams I would be extremely confident in starting Gordon as an RB2 now and Williams as a streaming flex option for when needed.

Kansas City Chiefs (1-2)

Chiefs suffered a tough loss to the Chargers this past weekend losing 30-24. The Chiefs who are considered one of the favorites to win the AFC this year are 1-2 early but, I’m not worried at all.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCESPatrick MahomesClyde Edwards-HelaireTravis Kelce

PLAYERS I LOVE

Patrick Mahomes
~ Mahomes is currently QB3
~ 28.9 PPR
~ 27-44 260 YDs 3 TDs 2 INT

  • Mahomes will continue to dominate and finish as a top 5 QB ROS.
  • Chiefs struggles are coming from poor defense and Mahomes mistakes right now
  • However, this doesn’t affect Mahomes fantasy production and never will.
  • Start Mahomes every week you can for the ROS and RELAX

Travis Kelce
~ 17.4 PPR
~ 7/104 YDS 14.86 YPC
~ 0 RedZone Targets

  • Kelce is currently the TE1
  • Kelce is currently the WR3
  • Kelce is currently the RB2
  • I’m going to leave it at this… Whoever has Kelce in your league… Don’t be afraid to throw something big to get him. Especially for all those teams that got off to a hot start at 3-0.

PLAYERS TO FADE

Clyde Edwards-Helaire
~ 16.9 PPR
~ 17 ATT 100 YDs 5.9 YPC
~ 2-9 REC with 1 TD
~ 2 out of 3 RedZone ATT

  • Clyde is currently RB34
  • Definitely not what you would expect to happen in a high-powered Chiefs offense but so far this season up until this game, Clyde hasn’t seen enough touches.
  • Against a division rival, Clyde had a season-high 17 Carries and in total 19 touches.
  • I would not be confident in having Clyde as my RB2 ROS. I would be confident if Clyde were my RB3/ FLEX. For everyone who drafted Clyde in the 2nd/3rd Round Good Luck.

Las Vegas Raiders (3-0)

The Raiders remain perfect after taking down the Dolphins 31-28. Raiders have LAC, CHI, DEN, PHI, and NYG coming up.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCESDerek Carr and Peyton Barber

PLAYERS I LOVE

Derek Carr
~ 25.24
~ 26/43 386 YDs 2 TDs 1 INT
~ 1/5 in RedZone

  • Carr is currently QB9
  • In most leagues, Carr wasn’t drafted. Now Carr has proven to be one of the best options off the Wire for the first 3 weeks. At this point, he has probably been picked up but looking at what Gruden is trying to do this year makes me excited for Carr ROS.
  • The Raiders have been known under Gruden to play to the other team’s potential. The Raiders coasted through the Ravens and Stellers like it was nothing and struggled against a Dolphins team who just got blown out the week before by the Bills.
  • I would be confident in having Carr as my starting QB ROS. If Waller were at any point not able to play, I would confidently sit Carr.

PLAYERS TO FADE

Peyton Barber
~ 23.2 PPR
~ 23-111 YDs 1 TD
~ 3/5 Rec 31 YDs
~ 6 out of 8 RedZone ATT

  • Barber has only played in one week this season and with Jacobs on his way back from injury, he’s is a guy that you can confidently drop in weeks to come.
  • Drake has proven to be the PPR back in the system even while Jacobs was there and healthy.
  • Use Barber as much as you can for another week possibly and then drop him.

Los Angeles Chargers (2-1)

The Chargers gave Mahomes just his 3rd loss against a division rival since the start of his career in a 30-24 thriller.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCESJustin HerbertAustin Ekeler, Keenen Allen, and Mike Williams

PLAYERS I LOVE

Justin Herbert
~ 38.84 Points
~ 26/38 281 YDs and 4 TDs
~ 5 out of 7 RedZone Passing
~ 4-16 Rush

  • Herbert is currently QB 13
  • Now I understand that just 15 and 16 fantasy points in the first two weeks of the season was concerning but this is 100% a guy that I will wait on to be more consistent.
  • Herberts BOOM games will without a doubt save his QB10> ADP
  • The chargers have finally figured out a healthy run dose that is allowing Herbert to evolve his game.
  • I don’t think we’ve seen Herbert at his best yet in 2021 and that is why I’m very confident in having Herbert as my QB1 ROS.

Austin Ekeler
~ 22.7 PPR
~ 11-55 YDs 5 YPC
~ 6/6 52 YDs REC 1 TD
~ 3/3 Rushing Attempts in RedZone
~ 1 Target in RedZone

  • Ekeler is currently RB5
  • Ekeler unlike last year is maintaining steady RedZone touches through 3 weeks
  • I have Ekeler at 6th best schedule for ROS for RBs
  • In a weird week 1, Ekeler had 0 Targets but since has had 9 and 6
  • I would be comfortable with having Ekeler as my RB1 ROS. If I don’t have Ekeler I may look to trade on a week when he underperforms going forward.

Keenan Allen
~ 19 PPR
~ 8/12 50 YDs 1 TD
~ 4/7 RedZone Targets
~ 2 REC in RedZone
~ 6.25 YPC

  • Allen is currently WR12
  • Allen is averaging 12 Targets a game
  • Despite having 1 TD on the year, Allen’s worst week was 14.8
  • I would be confident in having Keenan Allen as my WR1 ROS.

Mike Williams
~ 33.2 PPR
~ 7/9 122 YDs 2 TDs
~ 3/7 RedZone targets
~ 3 REC in RedZone
~ 17.43 YPC

  • Williams is currently WR2
  • In almost every game this season, Allen has been used underneath and across the middle, while Williams has been more of a deep ball guy leading the team with 287 Air Yards through 3 weeks.
  • Williams is considered one of the best value picks of this year’s draft and trading for him now might not be an option. If a team with Williams looks to trade him, predicting some dropoff, I would trade nothing more than an RB2 at most.
  • I would be confident in having Williams as my WR2 going forward.

PLAYERS TO FADE

Jared Cook
~ 4.7 PPR
~ 2/3 27 YDs
~ 0/7 RedZone Targets

  • Jared Cook is currently TE21
  • Cook’s preseason hype was that he would take the Target Share over that Hunter Henry had the year before. That has not happened yet with Cook having 8, 5, and 3 Targets.
  • Going forward I wouldn’t be confident in having Cook as my TE1 but would pay close attention to his RedZone usage going forward for some possible stream plays.
