My Favorite #2 WR in Fantasy Football for 2020

Most fantasy leagues are usually won in rounds 8-16 and are lost in rounds 1-7. The key to dominating your fantasy league in 2020 will be attacking those later rounds with great value picks.

Some notable names whose ADP was in rounds 8-16 last year that ended up in the top tier for that position include:

Looking at this list above I can confidently say that all but one of those players will be drafted a few rounds earlier for the 2020 Fantasy Season. One of the best WR2s consistently over the past nine years that has rarely moved up in ADP since 2013 is the one and only Marvin Jones Jr.

During the 2011 NFL Draft a trade involving OchoCinco was made to send the veteran Wide Receiver to New England in exchange for the Patriots 2012 5th round pick and 2013 6th round pick. These picks turned into Marvin Jones Jr. being drafted in the 2012 5th Round, 166th Overall and Cobi Hamilton drafted in the 2013 6th round, 197th pick overall.

Jones Jr. would go on to play three seasons in Cincinnati before testing the free agent market and eventually getting signed by the Detroit Lions in 2016. Jones Jr. is now in his last year of his contract and will arguably be in one of the best offenses in his career. Jones Jr. has never been the #1 Receiver on his team during his career.

In Cincinnati he was the #2 WR behind AJ Green for three years and when he signed by the lions in 2016, he was the #2 WR behind Golden Tate and currently Kenny Galloday. Ironically enough, Marvin Jones Jr. has never been the #1 WR on any team he’s ever been on, but in 2017, in the “shadow” of Golden Tate who pulled in a team leading 122 targets, Marvin Jones Jr. finished as PPR Fantasy Football WR12 while Tate finished as WR13.

Jones Jr.’s potential to be a top WR threat every year has been consistent since 2013. Here’s a look at Marvins Jones Jr.’s ADP and his finishing position in PPR rankings every year since his rookie season in 2012:

Every year except for 2016, Marvin Jones Jr. has crushed his ADP and is still overlooked by many fantasy players. Here’s a look at Marvin Jones Jr. ‘s stat sheet since his rookie year in 2013 and some notable players who took away targets from Jones Jr. over the years:

In every situation, Marvin Jones Jr. continues to prove that he is a weapon in any offense. In 2019, Matthew Stafford went down to injury in Week Nine leaving the QB1 spot to Jeff Driskel who played in three games and then David Blough to play the remaining five games. Even without Matthew Stafford, Marvin Jones Jr. continued to produce and saw the most targets in three of those five games he played in without Stafford.

First game without Stafford! Vs. Bears w/ Jeff Driskel
Second game without Stafford! Vs. Cowboys w/ Jeff Driskel
Third game without Stafford! Vs Redskins Jeff Driskel
Fourth game without Stafford! Vs. Bears w/ David Blough
Fifth game without Stafford! Vs. Vikings w/ David Blough

In only 13 games that he played in 2019, Marvin Jones Jr. was 4 receptions, 18 targets, 323 yards, and 2 TDs away from all new career highs. Based off of Jones Jr.’ averages under quarterbacks not named Matthew Stafford in 2019, Jones Jr. averaged 4 receptions per game, 6.8 targets per game, 48.8 yards per game, and 0.6 TDs per game.

Based off of these averages, Jones Jr. was on pace to have added 12 more receptions, 20.4 more targets, 146.4 yards, and 1.8 TDs if healthy in the remaining four games. This pace would have had Marvin Jones Jr. breaking his own PR of 65 Receptions, 108 Targets, and tying his 2013 high, ten TDs.

Keep in mind, this pace was with Jeff Driskel and David Blough. Matthew Stafford has played in every game for the past 8 years until the 2019 season. Jones Jr. missed the remaining three games in 2019 to an ankle sprain/pull which was said to not be a serious injury. This year is the last year on Jones Jr’ contract which means we could witness Jones Jr’ best season yet as he fights for a new contract come September.

With a healthy Stafford and the best offensive unit in his career, the 30 year-old Marvin Jones Jr. is a must-have in 2020, especially with the value he provides with his late-round ADP.

If you need any more reason to draft this man in 2020, give his remix to “In My Feelings” by Drake a listen…
