So, in the spirit of Underdog Sports, I want to offer some advice for their draft competitions (also named Battle Royale), one of my absolute favorite forms of fantasy football.
The basic concept of a draft competition on Underdog Sports is that you get to enjoy all of the pleasures of drafting a fantasy team – just on a weekly basis! You do not have to worry about a season-long obligation, you simply draft and forget. It gives you a chase to get those guys on your squad that maybe you missed on in your main leagues, but still want a chance to cheer for.
So let me offer up a few tips on how I take on this format:
Tip #1 – Know the Size of Your Contest
This may seem like something that is blatantly obvious, but knowing how many people are in your contest can be a very useful tool to your advantage. Being that Underdog’s contests allow 1 QB, 1 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, and 1 Flex, there will only be a small number of players selected. In a 4 man contest, only 24 total players will be taken and even in a 10 person draft, only 60 players will be taken.
So, now for the tip! Take a look at each position and see what position is deepest for you. Say, for instance, you are in a 4 person draft and like 7 of the top quarterbacks. That means that quarterback is a position that you can leave until the very end. Each team can only select one QB, so you are guaranteed that at least 4 of your 7 top QBs will still be there – even if everyone else takes a QB early!
Tip #2 – Swing for The Fences and Hit a Home Run
Okay, maybe a baseball euphemism wasn’t the best choice here, but the concept still applies! When you are drafting, if there is a player that you absolutely must have, take him and do not overthink it! If Antonio Gibson has been on fire or has a fantastic matchup, then don’t get cute and just take him.
In the same light, if there is a player that you have very high conviction on because of his matchup, then you should take your chance. Many times, players will feel obligated to select that “next man up” in the queue instead of a player they think will have a huge week. It is okay to break away from the suggested order and dig deep for a player!
Tip #3 – Stack the Players, Stack up The Points
A common strategy in fantasy football is to stack two players of a certain team. For instance, someone might choose to stack Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs. I absolutely love this strategy in draft contests, but there is a catch. This is a boom or bust strategy. If you hit on a combo that goes for huge points, there is a great chance that you will win the draft. If you miss, however, that is two players on your roster that will be duds. So I guess my final bit of advice with this one is – buyer beware!
